Treatment relieved Bjorns* pain and he has learned to live with herpes My name is Bjorn and I am 22 years old. Last summer
I met my current girlfriend. We used condoms during the first months because
I had never been for a check-up. Even so, I suddenly got what I suspected
was eczema in my pubic hair. It started with an itch and developed into
wounds at the base of my penis. When it started hurting while urinating,
I had to see a doctor. She suspected it could be herpes, but no samples
were taken and she said it would heal by itself. So it did, but soon enough,
I got it back. Then I went to see another doctor at the hospital, who
confirmed it was herpes, and have now received treatment that relieves
the pain and sometimes even stops the itching from developing into wounds. My girlfriend also went to see the dermatologist
at the hospital. Blood samples showed that she is infected with what is
supposed to be labial herpes. However, she has never had symptoms. Our
relationship really suffered from this, and we had to split up for a while.
As we learned that she must have an unrecognized infection and really
didn't know about it, we've been able to sort things out. I don't get
my outbreaks that often anymore either. Somehow, I've learned to live
with it. *Bjorns
