International Herpes Week 2001 Materials and Press Information

(6 Nov 2001)

The materials included in this section have been produced by the IHA for use by individuals, support groups and the media around the world. Those interested in supporting the International Herpes Week campaign are invited to use these materials in their own publications and local campaigns to help broaden the reach of the global awareness campaign.

Why support this awareness campaign?

Genital herpes is a common condition that affects an estimated 107 million people worldwide (up to 20% of the population), yet many people who are infected do not know they have the condition and could be passing it on to others. Infection with genital herpes has significant health, emotional and social implications. By providing accurate information about genital herpes we hope to raise awareness and help those infected get an accurate diagnosis and gain control of their own health.

During International Herpes Week (12–18 November 2001) the IHA is urging anyone who suspects they have symptoms of genital herpes or thinks they are at risk from the infection to seek medical advice and a proper diagnosis. Patient advocacy groups around the world are conducting activities to raise awareness of genital herpes among the general public to reduce the stigma and help prevent the spread of the condition.
