International Herpes Week 2004 (10th- 16th October 2004)
International Herpes Week 2004 is encouraging people throughout the world to be more open about herpes. The theme for the Week, 'I have herpes, don't you', highlights the fact that the viruses which cause genital and facial herpes are extremely common - the IHA has estimated that at least 50% of the world's population carries HSV-1, HSV-2 or both.

A date for the diary
A new Personal Perspectives section is making its debut on the website this month.
Recent visitors to the website may have noticed that over the past few weeks, the IHA has been calling for volunteers to keep an anonymous diary following a diagnosis of genital herpes. The response has been excellent and a number of people are already busy recording their thoughts and experiences over a period of three months, as they learn to live with genital herpes. The results will be posted in this section as they are completed, on a month by month basis. Each entry will be accompanied by a short medical commentary summarising key points relating to diagnosis and treatment options.

Safer Sex for Backpackers

The Family Planning Association (FPA) in Sydney is targeting backpackers with a safer sex campaign following revelations that around half of all backpackers visiting Australia have casual sex at some stage on their trip. Unfortunately, a large proportion of these travellers fail to take adequate precautions to protect their sexual health.
